The story of her birth...
I had to be at the hospital at 8am April 14, for my induction- We got Ethan off to school, then Jim, my mom, Cameron, and I were off to the hospital. I walked in and they were waiting for us. I got hooked up to the iv and at about 9 Dr. Bowyer came in and broke my water. At that point I was 4cm dilated. I really expected it to start hur ting immediately but it didn't- I guess because she hadn't dropped yet. Around 9:30 they got the pitocin started anid my contractiohins started picking up. I was handling it pretty well though so I decided to wait for my epidural. Jim went to go pick up Ethan from school so he could be there for the birth. They grabbed some lunch and headed back to the hospital. By this time, I had asked for my epidural because contractions were pretty painful and close together-I could barely relax from one before the next had started. The anesthesiologist came in with an intern- and unfortunately for me, she let the intern 'learn' on me- BAD idea! I had to sit up with my spine bent in a position that is NOT easy for a person 9 months pg, AND I had to hold still- not easy for someone with contractions that are coming hard and fast. I sat for forever- and she finally got through but it was the wrong spot, When I found out they were going to have to try again I almost started crying. so at that point the other anesthesioligist took over- thank god! They went in at a different spot and it worked. I don't know how long it took but it was a long time and I had about 20 contractions during the whole ordeal. The nurse checked me as soon as they were done with the epi and I was dilated to 7 and 100% effaced. She went to go get the dr and was going to come back to get the room ready. I could still feel on my right side but not on my left. I kept feeling pressure but it didn't seem really bad and I didn't feel like I had to push, but when the doctor walked in and checked me- and was really surprised when he could feel her head right there, ready to come out! By that time, the right had gone numb also so I couldn't feel anything at all. He started getting the bed ready. Ethan stayed in the room with Jim while my mom took Cameron out to the hallway. The Dr. asked if I wanted Ethan to be down at the foot of the bed- I was like uhhhh NO! I wanted him at the head so he could see, but not EVERYTHING! Well, He sat in a chair off to the side and the doctor didn't cover me with a sheet or anything so he ended up with a really good view anytway. Suddenly the Dr is telling me it is time- I am somewhat in shock because I can feel NOTHING. With both the boys, even with the epidural I had been able to feel something but not this time! It is very weird having someone tell you that a baby is about to come out and you feel nothing at all! So I pushed twice I think, and out she came at 1:55p.m.! And the very first thing I noticed is that YES, it was a girl! I didn't really tear- Ihad a small skid mark but that's it. I could not believe everything had happened so quick and easily! They laid her on my stomach and Jim cut the cord. She was so beautiful and so very tiny. Ethan was completely mesmerized by the entire thing. It drove him nuts after I had her though because he wanted to run out into the hall and get his brother and his grandma to see his baby sister too! And to tell them that he got to see her head come out! Baby girl measured in at 7lb 6oz, 20 inches long, and her apgars were 9/9.

They took her to the nursery and moved me to the recovery room. The checked out the baby, did her pulse oxygen level a few times to make sure it was okay because I requested that they do that, as it's an easy way to detect heart problems. Every time they checked it, it was perfect! We had a bit of a rough time with breast feeding because her mouth was so tiny, but we used a shield and it helped her to open her mouth bigger. I had requested to go home early because I didn't really see any sense in waiting around the hospital for another entire day, so the doctor said it was fine after the baby got checked out once she was 24 hours old- the babies can't leave before that because that is when they check the biliruben levels and do her pku test. I felt really great so it was torture to sit in the hospital for that entire next day. At least I had company though- Ethan and Cameron had gone home with my mom for the night, and Cameron wasn't feeling too well so the next morning he refused to go to school- he wanted to see his mom and his baby sister! So Jim went and picked them up and all of us spent the day at the hospital. Pretty much most of the girls that live on my street stopped by at some point as well, so that was nice.
When the baby was born, we still hadn't chosen a name- though I suspected it would be Ginger. The first name I came up with before I even knew she was a girl was Sloane but Jim hated it so it got crossed off the list. He wasn't fond of Ginger either but he seemed somewhat more receptive to it than to Sloane, and we couldn't agree on ANY names. Well, We tried to stay up late on the 14th discussing it and we just didn't know. We had hoped that as soon as we saw her we would just KNOW what name fit, but it wasn't that easy. We woke up again at about 4am and decided to stay up and hammer out a name since they likely wouldn't be happy with us leaving the hospital without naming her. Jim decided that we should name her Sloane. I was completely shocked and tried to talk him out of it because I was afraid he didn't like it, but I guess he had decided that he liked it. I had called her Ginger to myself for so long, so it was really kind of hard to switch to calling her Sloane. Sloane is a very strong and powerful name though and I think it will suit her well.
Early tuesday afternoon I decided to get her dressed in her coming home outfit and send her to the nursery for her pictures, but we put it on her and wow, it was WAY too big! I hadn't really been thinking when I brought the outfit with, but it was a 0-3 size. The pants went up to her ears and her shirt went down past her knees! Jim had gone back home to feed the dog and was on his way to grab us some lunch when I called him in a panic- he had to go buy her a new outfit that was newborn size! Lucky us, he ended up finding the EXACT same outfit that I had brought with, in a smaller size. It fit so much better!
They finally discharged her at 3pm, When they discharged her, her weight was only down to 7lb 4oz, so she had only lost 2 oz. The entire neighborhood was over that night- they were all so excited. It was great to have so many friends to share her with! Since we have been home she has done really well though the first 2 nights were pretty rough because she didn't sleep and just wanted to eat. She is a very good baby and only cries when she is hungry or when she poops- she absolutely can not stand to have a dirty diaper on for even a second after she poops, and she poops alot!
